Project Description

The N6 Bothar na dTreabh forms part of the National Primary Road Network and serves as the outermost orbital route of the eastern side of Galway City and terminates via the 5 arm Kirwan Roundabout.

The Kirwan Roundabout provides access to a Liosban industrial estate, Menlo residential area, the N84 Headford Road (National Secondary Route) and the N6 Headford Road (National Primary Route) which continues the N6 Corridor to serve both the North, West and Centre of Galway City.

As part of a sustained initiative by Galway Transportation Unit to relieve traffic congestion, multi modal transport systems and network management, Galway City Council has undertaken to upgrade all of the roundabouts along this corridor which were functioning well above capacity. As part of this initiative, five of the seven roundabouts that were located along the N6 Corridor have been replaced with signalised junctions. The Kirwan Junction is one of only two roundabouts remaining on the N6 Corridor through Galway City.

CH2M Barry were engaged by Galway City Council as lead consultant to upgrade the Kirwan Junction and are currently at Options Selection Stage.
