CH2M Barry are responsible for the master planning, design and development of 11 no. Motorway Service Area facilities throughout the major inter urban road network. The service areas comprise facilities for motorists and their passengers, which provide extensive parking, fuel station, toilet block, Garda enforcement area and restaurant food/outlet facilities.
The focal point of each service area is the open plan commercial building, housing the shop, restaurants and toilet facilities. These buildings, varying in size from 1,200m2 to 1,500m2, are a single storey, steel frame structure and feature numerous environmentally sustainable elements.
To date three service areas (6 buildings) have been constructed and are in operation. These service areas were constructed through a Public Private Partnership type contract where CH2M Barry fullfilled the role of clients representative undertaking construction monitoring and contract administration. A further three service areas have planning approval and it is intended that these service areas will go to construction in the near future. The remaining 5 service areas are at various stages of planning.
